Lecture

On horses and dragons: Manchu letters and literature

18 December 2022

15:00-16:15

During this lecture we will bring the language and literature of the Manchus out from the darkness to show how a small group of people was able to found one of the greatest land empires in history almost from scratch. (Dutch only)

(Event is in Dutch only) The Manchus ruled for more than 250 years over a great empire that covered much of Asia, including present-day China. In their language, which is related to Mongolian and Turkish, they wrote millions of texts that were covered up after their demise in 1912. During this lecture we will bring the language and literature of the Manchus out from the darkness to show how a small group of people was able to found one of the greatest land empires in history almost from scratch. The Manchu Foundation and Het Taalmuseum invite you to come and listen to the voice and pen of the Manchus. Together with Fresco Sam-Sin and Juul Eijk you will follow the Manchus from their horses to the dragon throne in Beijing. Walk-in is from 14:30, and warm drinks and cake are available.
